UK Driving Schools
Driving schools in the UK vary considerably from small one-man schools based in a particular Uk town or city to the large, national driving schools that offer driver training across the UK not just for car drivers but for those looking to get their HGV licence, their LGV licence or even their motorbike licence.
In the UK, professional driving instructors must be registered with the Driving Standards Agency (DSA), and to get registered they must pass a three-part examination along with regular ‘check tests’ throughout their career.
For this reason it is advisable to learn to drive through a driving school, such as a nationally run school like BSM and AA, or a locally run school registered with the DSA, as all their instructors are highly trained.
Over the years the AA Driving School has taught more than one million people to drive, while BSM plays an active role in lobbying the government on road safety and learner driver issues.
There are a number of things you should check before booking a driving lesson with a driving school, and these include whether the instructor has a red or green licence (red means they are still learning), whether you will have the same instructor for all your lessons, and whether they have any extra qualifications beyond the Approved Driving Instructor certificate.
In addition some UK driving schools offer additional services, such as home study packs, mock theory test papers, relevant books, and the Pass Plus scheme, so it’s worth checking what you will actually get.
